Drape Disrupt
Project type
Editorial
Date
2023
Rooted in the vibrant life of South India, this story transforms colour into a living, breathing force - one that wraps, moves, and defines the body through the saree. The drape is not passive.
It carries weight of culture, of memory and of everyday intensity.Rooted in the rich colour language of South India which is vermilion, turmeric, and gold - the saree carries history, ritual, and identity. But here, it no longer performs tradition. It questions it.
Traditionally a symbol of continuity, the saree here becomes a tool of contrast. It doesn’t blend into its surroundings it challenges them.
• The neon green blouse cuts sharply through the warmth almost like disruption.
• The graphic headpiece replaces traditional adornment, turning cultural references into bold, almost abstract forms.
• The styling strips away nostalgia and replaces it with attitude.
Symbolism
The paper windmill becomes central. It represents movement, change, and quiet resistance.Almost as a signal: Change is already in motion.Once, women were expected to remain still and held within defined roles, shaped by social structures that dictated direction and behavior. Stillness was control.
Like the windmill, they move with force, not against it but bending, shifting, choosing their own direction. What once symbolized fragility now carries motion, energy and quiet defiance.
The saree flows, but it no longer confines. The colour remains, but the meaning evolves.
The styling disrupts, but with intention and redefinition. This is not about breaking away from tradition. It is about bending it, until it becomes your own
